This deeply moving portrait of internationally renowned war photographer Don McCullin chronicles one man’s encounters around the globe, explores the ethics of photojournalism and the psychology of war, and ultimately evolves into a broader meditation on the human condition. As the world witnesses the perils of contemporary combat journalists working in international war zones, many wonder about the motivations for taking such risks. Is it the adrenaline? Raised in Finsbury Park amidst abject poverty and gang violence, Don McCullin learned early on what suffering looked like. As he ascended to the status of star photographer at the cutting edge London newspaper, The Sunday Times, McCullin exposed the horrors of war without falling into the traps of voyeurism or sensationalism, a rarity in today’s fast-paced media cycle. Don McCullin spent the majority of his career, which spanned the second half of the 20th century, covering wars and humanitarian disasters on virtually every continent: from the civil war in Cyprus, to the war in Vietnam, from the man-made famine in Biafra, to the plight of the homeless in the London of the swinging sixties. Intertwined with stunning archival footage and never-before-seen photos is the personal journey of this troubled and reflective artist, and the far-reaching questions he raises about the role of the spectator behind the camera. What is a journalist’s responsibility in the face of atrocities? How do you represent others without stripping them of their agency? Where do we draw the line between witness and negligent bystander? In 1981, the Murdoch Empire took over The Sunday Times, replacing the images of war horrors with those of leisure and pleasure, and cast aside Don McCullin’s realist photography for a more digestible journalism. As more and more news sources turn to infotainment, McCullin urges viewers to ponder the role of the media and most importantly, all of our personal and collective roles in addressing human suffering, especially as wars continue to rage on around us.
