Mahkoum, translated to "judged", tells the story of a young girl who is about to face her last judgement.
What crime did she commit?
When did existing became a crime punished by law?
Did she have the choice? She may always have.
When the soul of AVA is elevated and finds itself out of time and space, standing in front of a gigantic structure, she must come to his senses in order to accept the verdict of “the eye of judgment” which will determine whether she will begin her eternal life as an angel or a demon;
The facade is located out of time and space as we know it; and in front of the eye of the judgment each soul has been getting judged forever since the dawn of time.
Apart from the fact that the facade becomes, a full-fledged character in the film, the facade and its structure is an active inanimate being, who, through his energy, wisdom and power maintains order, and has been since the end of the ancestral war.
All in an ultimate stylization, the courthouse will resemble a divine entity, in front of which, each soul will present itself abandoning its free will for the first time, and bowing before the irrevocable decision of the eye of judgment, the one who sees everything, knows everything, and can do everything.
The eye of judgment is the very essence of this universe itself and, from which life is given and stability assured. It is the union of the two main vital sources of the realms; the stone of light and the stone of darkness - as different as they are complementary.
I found beauty in beliefs and the impact they could have on us.
I think about Egyptian Art with its pyramids and its engraving, Greek and Roman Ancient Art and their temples with their foolproof science, Byzantine Art, Church Art, and so on...
Many questions are left unanswered, what is good? What is evil? Can we generalize? How do we consider intentions in our actions? Making bad actions makes me a bad person? And who defines good and bad? Apart from my personal beliefs, creating such a universe is a way for me to express myself through visuals I really like, and through various art forms that interact in a way with the audience.
A very special thanks to everyone who inspired me, or helped me with their honest feedbacks for the last couple of weeks.
This project wouldn't have been the same without the talent of Aleks Baroud who composed and original score for this very short movie. Thank you for your patience, communication and for creating the music that suits Mahkoum.
