This short sequence is my entry for the „Jar With Fireflies“-contest organized by Andrey Lebrov and supported by Razer. In the creation process I decided to integrate a short story about the scene, because I think it’s important to build a scenery where every object has a particular reason and therefore everything tells a story. Like the book that has the title “Catching fireflies”. My goal for this scene was a romantic mood, so I placed several objects like the guitar, a wine bottle and some cloth around this campfire at a beach.

I think fireflies are a very romantic thing in general so I thought the backstory is about a couple that had a date on that day. Before they went to the beach, they caught some fireflies. Later that day they searched for a nice place without people. After some wine they wanted to swim naked. While they are swimming in the ocean something special happens.

Nobody wants to be trapped. Even a transparent glass can feel like in prison. One small firefly spots the trapped fireflies in the jar which has a book on top of it preventing the fireflies to escape. The book is way too heavy so the single firefly brings some help. With combined strength they managed to put the book aside and rescue the fireflies.

This sequence is fully CG and rendered on two 780ti with octane 4. The scene was built with Cinema 4D R20. The particle simulation was created with X-Particle 4. Every object is a free object from the web – you can find them very very easy ;-)
Some objects I created before. The jar was specially modeled for this scene.
Post production was done in AfterEffects and PermierePro.

Rendertime around two weeks straight. 1920x803p @ 25 fps
Path traced denoised pass with 1024 Samples per frame.
