The Lotus Flower Drifts is a documentary film that will follow the reflections of Hung Phan, a calm and jovial old man who loves pet fishes and swimming. He recounts his grueling journey to the United States as one of the boat people during the Vietnamese exodus following the end of the Vietnam War.
TRANSCRIPT
I was twenty years old

in 1982.

Oh, at that time it was horrible.

The communists control everything

so people don't have enough to eat.

I lived in Saigon but

we left like south, south of Vietnam

like Soc Trang.

After one day, we left Vietnam

there's a big storm came in.

I didn't have much to bring with me,

just a few pair of clothes and

that's it.

The boat's like

fifteen feet

by

fifty feet.

And there's like sixty-nine people

on that boat.

People just sit in there like

sardines.

Yeah.

It wasn't cold

but like

raining.

After we left the

island

controlled by the Vietnamese communists

--right--

for two days

and there was big storm and then

we were saved by the Thai fishing ship,

and they took us into their boat

because their fishing ship is a lot bigger.

--they left us on a small island.

There's no people there,

no water,

no food.

I just afraid if

if we stay there, we're going

to get thirsty

and get hungry.

I was swimming with one friend

like across the ocean,

like a few hours.

I was willing to sacrifice

everything to come here.

At night,

if you look at

the sea,

it was scary--

like dark,

and then you see the wave.

The boat is down here,

the wave is way, way on top--

a hundred feet high or

fifty feet high and that boat

just goes like this,

like the wave.

You just close your eyes

and don't look and then

you'll be okay!

Oh, that was great,

it was good experience!

I just like to swim

that's all.
