A Performative Documentary.

In examining the layers and nuances of self, we question our identity and get lost in the whirlwind of personas we put forward. It seems as though a different version of ourselves exists for different circumstances and thus, we perform to conform. But with each performance we bring to the surface a piece of ourselves, and they all come together to form a beautiful whole.

With the film touching on the personal subject of individuality, the film mainly capitalizes on close-ups of the dancer to create a sense of intimacy between the audience and the subject. This includes shots of her neck, arms, and legs as she moves.

We also aim to use the vibrancy (or lack thereof) of the different locations to capture the subject’s mental state. For instance, the slowness and darkness of the underwater shots will be used to convey uncertainty and the feeling of being stifled, whereas the brightness and openness of the garden reflects a sense of rebirth and renewal.

While none of us have truly attained the self-assuredness we seek, this film shows you what we think it feels like.

Genesis is a performative documentary on the journey of self-discovery, interpreted through dance.
