A woman experiencing a post-traumatic stress flashback, revisits a memory in which her and her ex-partner are in an intense moment of conflict.

The central themes of emotional turmoil and relationship-based trauma are expressed throughout my film entitled, ‘Fractured’. The film elicits a dream-like quality through dark, dense and sinister visual imagery, alluding to the violent flashbacks of the main character’s ex-partner’s infliction. Through the application of blue flashing lights, I was able to convey and further engage the audience into the intense emotions felt by the protagonist. Accompanied with a jolting and pulsating soundscape, the visual imagery enabled the heightening of suspense, further delineating the emotional impact of the abuse inflicted upon the protagonist. Through the application of other cinematic codes and conventions such as camera movement, editing and manipulation of structure of time, I was able to accurately depict the protagonist’s emotional turmoil in which a bombardment of scarring memories resurfaces. Making my film appeal stylistically and aesthetically, was also an engagement technique for which allowed me to enhance the viewing experience of my film. Incorporating varying shot sizes, editing effects and transitions, enabled my audience to be enticed through the stark and flashing rhythm of my film, as well as interpret the deeper visual metaphors. Inspiration for my film was drawn from the Independent drama, ‘Moonlight’. Conventions of this film, specifically the use of saturation to create more depth to the visual and lighting to create mood (bright colours such as blue hues), heavily inspired me to approach my film in a more stylistic manner, enticing the audience visually, whilst also ensighting a deeper, emotional meaning.
