The first part of this lecture introduces the broad theme of the Multi-Origin Nature of Chinese Architecture.

Beyond the introduction, this part of the lecture briefly outlines these case studies Hemudu Culture, Banpo Culture, Yangshao Culture, and Longshan Culture.

1. In around 7,000 - 5,000 BCE, Hemudu Culture was identified to be existing at the Yangtze River Area in Southern China. Due to its unique natural environment, Stilt Architecture was largely applied as their major form of construction.
2. In Northern China, Banpo Culture emerged as another origin of Chinese architecture in around 5,000 - 3,000 BCE in Shanxi Province. They were used to their traditions of pit dwelling or semi-subterranean dwelling.
3. Yangshao Culture (3,000 - 2,000 BCE) were famous for their skills in the colorful painting of pottery in the Central and West Region of Yellow River.
4. In the Lower Yellow River Region, Longshan Culture (4,000 - 2,000 BCE) was existing with their extensive technique of making a different type of pottery - Eggshell Ware.

The second part of the lecture addresses its emphasis on the Typology of Chinese Architecture.

In this part of the lecture, different types of Chinese Architecture have been briefly demonstrated based on their design concepts, which is associated with the social and economic conditions.

1. The scales of horizontality, verticality, and arrangement in the layout and elevation of traditional Chinese Architecture could be related to the social hierarchy of its owner.
2. The differences between the free-space arrangements of Chinese Imperial Gardens and Private Gardens were highly determined by the system that followed the imperial process.
