Text: Fecund

Coppiced hazel, straight and equal saplings.
Centuries contained in sunshine, root and leaf.

Here new life begins,
where muddy puddles leave a legacy.
There will be frogs and newts, mosquitoes,
bats at dusk and deer at dawn.
My eyes well up for no good reason.

So, is that all it is with me?
An empty belly where there was no child?

The great plays deal in loneliness
and I am not unhappy. There’s no space
I need to fill with someone’s far existence.
Mine’s a single figure,
staring back along the path I’ve walked.

I’m sturdy as a graveyard oak grown old,
content and patient in my sorrow.
