自我 (jiga)
According to the structure of self, as formulated by the American philosopher George H. Mead (1863-1931), the Japanese awareness of self can be said to consist of a weak sense of the self-as-subject (“I” of shuga) and a strong sense of the self-as-object (“me” or kyakuga).
From early on, the Japanese developed a collective, communal lifestyle. The cultural characteristic born of such a collective lifestyle is conformity. Instead of asserting his or her individuality, a Japanese prefers to accept the consensus of the collective whole. Because he or she dislikes being outside the collective whole and derives a psychic satisfaction from being bound emotionally to the group, the “me” under the influence over the individualistic “I”, and even the “I” is concerned with how he or she is perceived by others.
The Japanese is, in the American sociologist David Riesman’s terms, “other-directed” rather than “inner-directed”. The “I” of the Japanese is the “I” of a communal identity.
Quote from Japan – An Illustrated Encyclopedia, published by Kodansha Ltd, 1993
