Back in 2019 in our Ward the Stake came and gave a presentation about Capt. Dan Jones life. He came from England and became the captain of the river boat known as the "Maid of Iowa". Eventually he was converted to the Church and became a body guard to Joseph Smith. He received what is known as "The Last Prophecy" of Joseph Smith (the day before his death) in which he was told that his life would be spared and he would return to fulfill missions to Wales. He converted over 5000 members and is considered to be the greatest missionary in the history of the Church.
This Ward presentation was to introduce the building of a float reproduction of the "Maid of Iowa" for inclusion in the 24th of July parade in 2020. It would end up being delayed due to the pandemic until 2021. Bishop Robert Bradshaw came dressed as Captain Dan Jones and told his life story as if he were Jones for the next 35 minutes. It was most impressive.
After this presentation was over, I hurried home and grabbed two video cameras and returned to the ward to film the presentation when given to the next ward. I just had the feeling that I should do this.
Last Saturday (July 18, 2021) they had an open house so the stake could see the "Maid of Iowa" close up. I went with another video camera. There I learned that Bishop Bradford had passed away this past March. He not only had designed the ship but had created a working model that had demonstrated what it would look like and how it would work. The model was battery operated with a turning water wheel. The upper levels were designed to recede downward so that the float could be large and still be able to move under the electrical wiring on the streets. Smoke came from its two chimneys and smoke poured out on demand.
