For the last 40 years we have been spoiled with a plethora of wonderful pieces of science fiction cinema. From the bleak and visually stunning tone of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, to the animated lightshow of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira, each story danced around similar themes of existence that gave a completely new and unique set of ideas for the viewer. I myself found many questions flying through my head as I went on many adventures through these wonderful pieces of cinema. What will the future of the human race truly look like? Can the idea of sentience change forever? Will consciousness ever be explained? And perhaps the biggest question of all, what does it mean to be human?
So many of the stories within the science fiction genre dance around these questions, but the story that plays with these ideas the best in my opinion is Ghost in the Shell. I will never forget the feeling that came over me when I looked upon the lights of New Port City for the first time. A vast expanse of a city that stretched forever, with an enormous cluster of skyscrapers at the epicenter that seemed to reach up to the stars themselves. And the cyborg main character Motoko Kusanagi bringing me along with her as she fights a battle within the city, and within herself.

The original 1995 classic is a masterpiece, and I could make a long list of reasons why it is such a captivating piece of art that will never be replaced, but the reason I am writing this is to express my appreciation for the most recent Ghost in the Shell series, and more specifically the ending scene and how it did a fantastic job of honoring the main character.
In the new series, The world is in an ongoing state of war that they call ‘the sustainable war’. Created by the US, the sustainable war was designed to keep America with economic power. Things go awry however, when the artificial intelligence known as 1A84 that was designed to run the sustainable war goes rogue, and brings the human race to the brink of annihilation through nuclear weapons. Major Motoko Kusanagi and section 9 are tasked with bringing down the AI.
Our main character discovers however, that this threat of destruction is a mere delusion in order to distract the powers that be. The real motivation of the AI was to gain the ability to create alternate realities in order to keep the human race in a state of sustainable flux. The reality that contains the timeline that is being presented is merely one of many, and through this multiverse, the human race can continue to evolve without risk of exterminating itself in the process. The world is unaware of these alternate realities that they are a part of, with the exception of only a few, which brings us back to Kusanagi.
This is where we find the unique quality of our main character. She is set apart from the others. The staple of Kusanagi is her ambiguous ability to live in a state of dreams and reality. She maintains a constant flux between the two, and at times it seems There is nothing that separates her dreams from reality. She is a true romantic, and because of Kusanagi’s one of a kind personality as a cyborg, she is unaffected by the power of the AI.

In the end the AI gives Kusanagi a choice. 1A84 allows her the opportunity to put everything back to normal, or allow it to finish its work and connect everyone on the planet to the multiverse. In the end, Kusanagi chooses to let humanity enter this new phase of evolution.

Our show ends with Kusanagi leaving where we first found her all those years ago in 1995. Standing upon a rooftop looking over New Port City, ready to free fall towards the ground below. Everything about this final scene is encapsulating. The scenery, the music, the camera angles, it all ties everything together. As Kusanagi stands looking out upon her city, her most trusted companion Batou greets her, letting her know she doesn’t have to face this new reality alone. Kusanagi decides however that she must leave, as her disposition to live in a state between her dreams and reality beckons her to search for something more. The two companions say their goodbyes to each other, and Kusanagi jumps from the roof to enter the multiverse and live out realities as she sees fit.
This ending is one of ambiguity, and it is why I love it so much. It gives a whole new meaning to what it means to be alive, as we know that Kusanagi will most likely traverse for many years to come, with no sign of stopping. Her final words to Batou telling him “not to forget that they existed in those times”, leaves the viewer with a unique sense of hope. You relate to Kusanagi feeling this way. We don’t know why we hold on to these things, but we do nonetheless. Our memories and stories are all we have perhaps, and maybe that is why we seek to preserve them.
I was left with this feeling of hope at the end of this series. And I hope others experience the same. Also a side note I absolutely love Kusanagi's character model. My favorite without a doubt.
