Two TV film critics spend their week arguing over the latest big release. One thinks the film is incredible while the other thinks that it’s terrible. Will they ever see eye to eye?
Tasked with making a short film around the idea of ‘incredible’, I started thinking of films that I found to be just that. From there I began to think about positive reviews and this led to the idea of film criticism and the ever divisive nature of the moviegoing audience. I thought it would be fun to make an homage to Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, two film critics from Chicago who became household names across America for their TV show in which they would often disagree to the point of a full blown argument, and who are personal inspirations of my own.
The overall theme of ‘incredible’ becomes the eventual crux of my short film. While both critics hold on to their opinions in the end, they also acknowledge that one of the most incredible things about cinema is that the experience of watching a film changes from person to person. The greatest film in the world to one person may also be the worst in the world to another, and likewise, some can find meaning in a film that holds nothing for others. As one of the characters says in the short, that is what I find truly incredible about film.
