On 16 March 2020 there I was, at home and locked down.
A remake of a scene from Dressed to Kill I'd mapped out three years before was still on the waiting list. I'd already planned to play the two characters myself, as in Body Double 1, 5, 15 and 30.So there I was in my room, with a few LEDs and clothes acquired on the Internet three years ago, armed with a camera I'd only just bought. The timing was perfect. The room's too small, but what the hell, I stick the camera in the corners, I adapt. I'm having trouble seeing what I'm filming: alone, in drag and lip-syncing, I need a lot more takes than usual – close to 40. I need time to learn the script and the movements, and get the focus right. I try some images, check them out and once it's all okay I do lots of takes. What with managing the computer, the camera, the lights, the acting and especially the eye angles, it's quite a challenge. And my false nails don't make it any easier when I have to move stuff around or get the SD cards out of the camera. A bit of blue gelatin and a power strip that occasionally sneaks into shot, me switching it on and off during the takes and trying to hide it in the decor or behind my back. That makes me laugh and sets me thinking again about the self-portraits by Jürgen Klauke and Robert Mappelthorpe and Cindy Sherman. Here's Body Double 37!
