Il documentario è ambientato a bordo della nave Open Arms che naviga nelle acque del Mediterraneo centrale, alla ricerca di altre barche in difficoltà. Dal momento che una forte campagna in tutta Europa ha portato alla criminalizzazione delle ONG negli ultimi anni, Open Arms, con il suo equipaggio di giovani volontari provenienti da Spagna e Italia, è diventata di fatto una delle poche navi dedicate alle operazioni di ricerca e soccorso nel Mar Mediterraneo. Open Arms is one of the few independent vessels left carrying out search and rescue operations in the
Mediterranean sea. Borders follows its South European crew from the danger and technical complexity of
rescue operations through to moments of deep self-reflection by the crew and rescued passengers as they
sail to relative safety. The film is a romantic, collective narration of encounters and solidarity on the edge of
Europe in the Mediterranean Sea.
