Late in Borderlands 3, when Players have access to the majority of Pandora, they may come across a character by the name of Buff, the Film Buff. He is disgruntled that the Children of the Vault (the baddies) have taken over an outdoor movie theater, preventing Buff from premiering his latest film.
When Players have successfully liberated the theater, they are treated to his film; a visual treatise on art, reality, and the inherent fear of being a fraud. Unsurprisingly, Buff's film isn't quite the thought-provoking spectacle one would expect. But pay no mind! We have no doubt it will be a cult hit one day.
Development Background
This was a fun collaboration between scriptwriter Connor O'Cleary and myself. The goal was to go full art-house cliché - black and white filmstock, surreal imagery, and, of course, signs of extremely low-budget film making.
Inadvertently helping to maintain the low-budget feel, I had no departmental resources to rely upon. I repurposed whatever assets I could find (props, animations, etc) to make this film happen. While all of the content was generated in the Unreal Engine, the final movie was assembled, edited, and finished in After Effects.
Trivia
* We make no claim that Buff the "Film Buff" is directly or indirectly influenced by any particular
filmmaker, even though his voice may allegedly very sound similar to someone possibly living
or dead.
* You might spot moments in the film where Buff's quality suffers (the prodded Varkid at :24 or
the accidental green-screen at 1:00). Ahh, the life of an underappreciated auteur!
* The film leader at the very beginning was created from scratch by me completely in
After Effects using no outside art assets (other than fonts).
