Another jukebox favorite of mine on New Year's Eve 1972-73 was this "one hit wonder" by the British reggae rock band Blue Haze. There were a number of remakes that year thanks to artists like Robert John ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight"), Greyhound ("Moon River"), Bobby Vinton ("Sealed With A Kiss"), well as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Ricky Nelson all being on the Top Ten for the first and last time during autumn 1972. The pilot film for what would later be known as "Happy Days" had already aired and American Graffiti would be released on January 1, 1973 as the the 50's nostalgia wave took off.
Conductor and arranger Johnny Arthey and record producer Phil Swern teamed up to form the group Blue Haze, enlisting singer Teddy Brown as its lead vocalist. Arthey and Swern had previously teamed up to produce music for Brown on solo albums and singles on the Trojan label. On New Year's Eve "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" had entered the Top 30 at #26 ... and was still moving up. It reached #20 on US charts in mid-January 1973.
So here is yet another great oldies tune to help you usher in New Year's 2014. Happy New Year!
