THE PLAY:
Hunkered down in the midst of a global crisis, the Family are under strain. Inherited mechanisms of domination and exclusion painfully resurface.
This interdisciplinary piece explores family networks distorted by obsession, control, discontent, overprotection, perfectionism, projection, constriction, and even abuse. Drawing from a variety of family-based dramas, the production will engage with veiled relationships manifested in a pictorial symbolism. Text re-signifies the compositional story, focused on the turbulent expression of fear, submission and attempted rebellion.
Investigating as its starting point the idea that family is a system of inherited mechanisms, this devised piece further delves into the notion of identity understood as a construction. It problematizes the concepts of identity and subjectivity, and asks whether the constructed self isn’t inextricably born of our familial inter-relationships, and why an individual might choose to adopt or refute a facade of normality in search of their identity. Confronting our inherited legacy is the generative theme of the piece, spanning from the personal to the universal and collective unconscious. Nuria Legarda
