Bicentennial City

A portrait of untold stories from Philadelphia and the celebration of America’s 200th birthday party in 1976. The 4th of July weekend suffered from overblown expectations. In the wake of the Vietnam War and complicated by the provincial policies of the controversial mayor Frank Rizzo, the celebrations represented the promise of redeeming the economically troubled city. But the celebration laid bare some pressing questions of America’s national identity. This new essay film “Bicentennial City” captures the voices behind the years of planning that led to events for, ultimately, two million visitors. The film spotlights the city as a dynamic place of unrecognized communal activity like the Save Chinatown Movement, the Vendor Wars, and the tremendous hub of creativity at Philadelphia International Records with a focus on session drummer Earl Young who invented the Disco beat.

Featured interviews include: Public Historian Kenneth Finkel, Philadelphia City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Pennsylvania Folk Life Festival Coordinator (1976) Ann Mintz, Independent Historian Francis W. Hoeber, Community Activist Mary Yee, Urban Historian Nathaniel Popkin, Artist and Educator Leroy Johnson, Jeweler and IMPresario Henri David, and Supreme Court Principal Justice Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation Rev. J. R. Norwood.

Directed by Thomas Devaney, Matthew Suib, and Aaron Igler with Hilary Brashear, Julia Coletti ’21, Jixin Jia ’21, Edward Ogborn ’19, Cole Sansom ’19, and Grace Sue ’20. Produced by the Summer DocuLabs Program, a joint initiatiive of the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities and VCAM at Haverford College
