A true story about a legendary, enlightened meteorologist who spent her days on earth to try convince the world that her alien Starman and lover from an advanced human race existed, and held the only solutions to all our problems on earth. Science? Fiction? Or the greatest science-fiction love story of all time?

‘Not afraid this time?’ Potentially a chilling question, not least when asked by an alien standing beside his hovering flying saucer. But this is how the world’s ‘most trusted’ UFO story started for a very smitten Elizabeth Klarer. But it’s not where it ends for me.

In 1975 she took the world’s first recognised UFO photos (with this box brownie). She also claimed to have traveled to a Utopian sounding planet Meton, in the Alpha Centauri star system, where she had a relationship with the scientist and ET Akon. Yes, Akon, like the rapper. There he taught her about their technologies and our future here on earth that was impossible for her to have known at the time. But that’s not all that happened on Meton. They also made mad love up there and she birthed him a son, Ayling, at the age of 47.

Back on earth, she was subsequently quizzed by the world’s leading experts, who were dumfounded by her knowledge. Presentations to the UN and House of Lords followed. But then her source was revealed. And that it was an alien who took her to his planet in his spaceship to show her, that, ruined it for many.

Adamant to prove that her lover and his perfect people, all blond and blue eyed, existed, she wrote a non-fiction book titled, ‘Beyond the Light Barrier’ in 1980 which eventually went out of print. In 2008 a new edition emerged, with a bonus chapter by her son David - from a previous, earth husband. And even though David had seen many UFO’s in his life, Akon’s spacecraft wasn’t one of them. He disputes his mother’s claims with a heavy heart. I also found that many racist paragraphs were also simply removed between the editions.

This story has haunted me since my childhood days. Fast forward to 2010 when I tracked down her son David, making me the ONLY filmmaker to secure the inside story, access, a treasure trove of archival, evidence and interviews. Including footage of the only in-depth interview with Elizabeth herself.

Other highlights include Chernobyl, Project Blue Book revelations on SA soil; the ring Akon gave her with the stone that’s not from this earth; the first police officer on record to ever shoot at a UFO and her unfinished manuscript with the actual scientific knowledge.

Dr. John Kani, from Black Panther, who has contributed to bringing radical change to SA, will be the story’s narrator. He will share his thoughts as he guides us through it. Animation in comic book style will serve as the re-enactment medium as well as a visual through-line of the film.

Through making this biographical film since 2010, where we stand on scifi or Akon turns out to be the least of one’s worries. It has led me to a major re-evaluation of her work and values. And with the long over-due zeitgeist around Black Lives Matter, there is yet another reason which reminds us just how deep racism is embedded, even in a world of whacky UFO stories, claims and alien sex. And I will not be quiet about it for the sake of a cult status genius who led an extraordinary life and what she might have liked to believe.

We need completion finance. The short I made, won the Puma Catalyst Award and sold out at several film festivals. It also became the first documentary globally to win Ethereum in the world’s first ever Ethereum Film fund. It’s also supported by the National Film and Video Foundation.
