Ascent is a compilation two years in the making. Approximately 13,000 miles driven over five weeks, during the 2018 and 2019 spring storm seasons. Dozens of incredible super cell storms. A few good but many more terrible fast food meals. And countless hours putting it all together back here in New Zealand.

2018 and 2019 were both odd seasons for us. The majority of our time was spent weaving about the hills and high terrain of New Mexico or West Texas. Long challenging days, with no shortage of crazy dynamics, but a distinct lack of tornadoes.

I'm from New Zealand, and travelling to the United States every year is a privilege I don’t take for granted. So when we are there, we chase hard and we chase everything. We made the most of what we had, but missed out on some of the more spectacular days due to unlucky timing. I’ll admit, a few lessons were learned as well (such as not to visit tourist attractions in the morning or you might miss a lunchtime tornado). But I can’t help feel that luck hasn’t been on our side either.

Despite the frustrations, I’ve at least been able to put together this short film for my troubles. Hopefully you recognize some of the storms!

I won’t be back to chase in 2020 for obvious reasons. Perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise. I’ll spend some time focusing on myself and other endeavors. Chasing is tough work. Stay safe and good luck out there this year, no doubt it will be one of the best!
