Sam was one of my best friends.  I met him because he lived across the street when we left New York and moved to a weird island in New Hampshire for a bit. He came over to yell at my wife because our trash was blowing up the street on not trash day. Sam started to come over a lot.  He had a dog named Sophie. She was a sweet old golden retriever.  He loved her so much. I liked hearing his stories, We became friends. He would bring me Japanese hand rolls for the long flights I was constantly on. When I was home we would have cook outs , he would make us this russian vodka chicken recipe and we would get hammered on wine. We would eat soba on NYE for good luck. His license plate was his last name. It was super aggressive. It yelled ASANO. He was always doing things, always trying to make something better.  He wasn't sitting around. He was smart and he was funny.  He would tell me about growing up,  his mom and dad and fishing for tuna in Japan. He liked trains. We talked about doing the Siberia one. He told me about coming to America, his college years at MIT, how hard it was to find a girlfriend because he was too short and all the crazy shit he had invented that we are all using today.  He told me about his wife that he missed so much who had passed years ago and how proud he was of his kids. He showed me pictures of him and the Hubble telescope that he worked on. He took me to get a ring for my wife, and he would write the date on literally everything he owned. He did not give a shit about what people thought of him and would host dinner parties with everyone in town no matter who they were or what they did and we all were amazed at how old mustard could be and still taste ok. He would surround himself with people that were motivated and doing things.  He would tell me the same stories 25 times and I would gladly listen. We took him to let Sophie go when she was just too old to keep going and we were there the day he brought the new identical pup home and told us her name was Sophie.   I started to make this movie about him around that time and never really looked at the footage until a few weeks ago.  Sam died about a year ago and we had kinda lost touch along the way. I heard from him a few weeks before he passed when he sent me a text to wish me a happy birthday.  I miss him. Like I think Sophie does. Music by weedeater.
