We’re pleased to launch the first of two moving image commissions for Big Screen Southend, awarded through a call for submissions in 2020. Death of a Village, 2021, by artist Annabel Taylor Munt launches on 24 July and will continue until 11 September 2021. The film will be screened daily on Big Screen Southend from 11am to 5pm.

Using myths and legends from ancient past, the contemporary dance and sound piece explores the representation of women (including cis and trans) within these narratives and the systemic silencing of these voices in present-day society. Exploring early human existence where wealth is shared and law holds no order, we follow the lives of the villagers as the first act of evil is committed. As the floodgates open and humanity go into exile ‘loyalty, truth and consciousness are taken over by guile and deception’.

As the evil infects the villagers, we are left wondering how they will navigate through this ‘new world’. The choreography takes movements from swarms and packs of animals, medieval battles as well as rugby scrums. Creating an environment where the audience and performers feel in a state of unease, the sound accompanying the piece amplifies the choreography through spoken word, moments of total abstraction, rhythmic singing, and chant-like dialect.
