We offer tribute today to Néjib Ayed, former General Director of the Carthage Film Festival (RIP), who we learned passed away as we wound down Bronx World Film Cycle, Summer 2019 this past August. Our tribute captures him presiding over a press conference at the Tunisia Pavilion, Festival de Cannes in May of 2019 in which he outlines the Festival’s return to its original vision as a “tricontinental festival” open to Arab and African film and to film from Asia and Latin America. Néjib spoke of the festival‘s 50 years of existence bandied about from one place to another without a home, and of “militancy” as part of its identity. Nowadays every edition of Carthage Film Festival (in French, Les Journées Cinematographiques de Carthage) -- the oldest and most important film festival in the North African and Arab world -- fills the ancient city on the south Mediterranean with a quarter of a million film viewers occupying over 11,000 seats in venues all over the city. It has started initiatives in other parts of the country and embarked on partnerships with emerging regional film powerhouses such as South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. We salute Néjib Ayed, a man of the world universally beloved by staff, colleagues and friends for the leadership and vision he showed in steering this venerable institution to safe port. May his example inspire new models of film and arts institutions for the benefit of all the skills and trades that converge to make the magic of great cinema possible.
