A young woman undergoes visual euphoric hallucinations while drinking alcohol which leads to an unsettling experience after consuming too much.
Named after the alcohol content in an average bottle of vodka, 40% is a film of exploration into the intoxicated mind. It explores a timeline of consumption; from the beginning to the first hit, to the pleasure, to the uncertainty and regret. We follow a young woman, drinking by herself, where her initial experience is coloured in the hues of euphoria. She celebrates her self-created dreamscape filled with tranquillity, assisting her to travel to a calming and exciting mindscape.
Despite all positive intentions, her experience is corrupted and lined with uncertainty. She must reevaluate her current state; where she is conflicted between risking further euphoria or settling with the pleasant sensations she’s already feeling. This internal blurring of lines/boundaries takes on a physical manifestation, appearing on her face in inexplicable shapes and colours confused with absence and static. She is told to stop after it's too late.
However as the night continues, so does her consumption, where her experience takes a turn to become unsettling, unnerving and filled with regret. Fuelled by overconsumption, the initial phantasmagoria takes on a nightmarish tone, as pleasant sensations are replaced by uncertainty and disquiet. Through morphing transitions and layered heightened soundtrack, she enters a realm of unease which is inescapable, cluttering her mind out of her own control. Inevitably, she has intoxicated her body and her own mind, poisoning her dream experience.
