I’m back with another dream project. A graphic novella about driving across canada and thinking about life. Several years ago with the help of many funders I was able to make a book of watercolours and it has honestly been the highlight of my career. But it got me thinking about a lot of other ideas and other ways to tell a story. And a graphic novella seems like a logical next step. And as these things seem to go it a perfect storm is brewing. In October, I am doing a three week residency in northern B.C at Cassiar Cannery near Prince Rupert. It’s the perfect oprtunity to start a new project. I am planning to drive there, all the while making drawings and notes recording my misadventures, the sights and sounds, thoughts and small epiphanies and all the while recording tips and suggestions for staying sober (fingers crossed) while on such a long, lonely journey. Then I’ll use my time at the residency to put it all together. A lyrical road of tangents connected one to the next across the country. If it sounds a little ambitious just remember, it’s only a novella and anything is possible.
And of course I have some fun perks. The graphic novella/comic book of course. But also, a digital drawing profile pic, watercolour profile pics and even a larger commission for the truly brave at heart. I haven’t quite cracked the code yet for how to survive as an artist but at least I’m having fun making the truest work of my life as I figure it out and I am truly grateful to all who have helped on the way.
