The high-spirited libretto and brilliant music of L’Étoile helped to establish Chabrier’s name as a composer in 1870s Paris. With a heady mix of the surreal, a comic plot with lots of theatrical potential and the main characters’ belief that the stars control their destiny, L’Étoile is one of the most entertaining works in the genre. Although it was not fully appreciated in its day, from the mid-1980s onwards L’Étoile has received an increasing number of productions internationally, and is now recognised as a unique example of French 19th-century light opera, set apart from other examples by its sophisticated orchestration and gossamer-light wit. Laurent Pelly directs this visually stunning production from Dutch National Opera in 2014, featuring costumes by Laurent Pelly and Jean-Jacques Delmotte. Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Christophe Mortagne head a distinguished cast, along with the Residentie Orkest The Hague conducted by French opera specialist, Patrick Fournillier.
