A turnover is the loss of possession of the ball to the opposition (Alder, 2017) Within Game X, turnovers are quite common, and this can be due to many contributing factors including prior knowledge and experience of game play, movement skill level and execution, the teams competency network and implementation of the collective strategy.
Clip A shows turnovers that have occurred due to a less experienced players decision making skills. Jade is in possession and makes a pass to Amy as she is in a better scoring position. She fails to look backwards to Matt or Heather who is coming into space. Wyatt intercepts by getting in front of Amy. As a perceived aim of this game is to score, an inexperienced individual would look to pass in that direction rather than to create space and time for movement and pass to someone who is not in an immediate position to score.
It is often noted that many players will take the first option they see compared to waiting and assessing the most valuable option. Greg is seen non-verbally indicating his readiness around the goal area to receive the ball and Renee makes this pass. She knew of his high autonomy within the field territory and invasion game setting and this played into her competency network. This pass is obstructed by Simon who noted this non-verbal communication and knows of Greg’s positive position to score.
One repetitive sequence of play that results in a turnover is of Gabby taking the ball down the court from her position in goals. As she has a basketball background, dribbling the ball up comes naturally for her but given the strategy put in place within the team, her position was to defend goals and to be a pivotal point of access if there are no other safe options up the court. Wyatt is seen using the reserve principle and passing safely back to Gabby. This usually would allow for the team to move back down the court and create more open spaces to move into, however Gabby’s instinct in play is to move up the court. Multiple times Gabby is seen passing the ball a far distance rather than a safe and smaller pass. If this were transferred into her basketball setting then these types of passes would usually work, however with a lighter ball that hangs in the air, this type of pass in ineffective and is easily intercepted.
