3.a – Yellow team have displayed a quite consistent level of positive communication in previous clips and this is especially evident in clip 3.a when Wyatt resets back to the keeper. Our team had a collective strategy and understanding that when the pink team was put under pressure, most of the time they would push a lob pass which we could try and disrupt. In this case, the effective communication was when we yelled, “push, push” and our game play configuration then moved into a full-court press. This pressured Gabby who then threw a lob pass which was then intercepted by Lucy. Without the communication of “push” our team would have stayed back, and the pink team’s possession would have ended differently further up the court. Lucy understood her own personal resources well and knew that she had a significant height advantage over Wyatt and went for the interception with this knowledge.

3.b – This next clip shows the positive result of our team strategy to force lob passes. Pressure was put on Jess who then threw a lob pass to Baillie, Amy showed anticipation and intercepted the pass. Amy then hit the middle of the court off a turnover which was one of our action rules. When I received the pass, I saw non-verbal communication from Matt by raising his arms and I then threw the ball into the space where I wanted Matt to travel to. The yellow team’s goal was to focus on our transition and game play configuration after turnovers, and as the clips progress, it is evident how incorporating these different aspects of the Grammar of Games model into the planning of strategy have helped to improve this area in our game play. It seems that the yellow team have understood the underlying principles of field/territory/invasion games with possession, as after each turnover they move to create space and opportunity for the team and move to a space to receive a comfortable and high percentage pass.

3.c – In this clip we see an example of how decision making for an individual player has resulted in a negative outcome. Off the back of a turnover, yellow team makes a fast break and hits Jade who is unmarked on the semi-circle of the goal. Jade’s following decision would suggest that she is in the novice stage (French & Spurgeon 1995) and is not quite confident in either herself or the game she is playing. I would suggest that Jade should have taken the shot as she was already in a shooting motion – arm cocked back and stepping into the shot and she is also uncontested. However, the yellow team should be aware of Jade’s competency and communicate more effectively to her to help her, both Matt and Heather were unmarked and could have indicated they wanted to receive the ball into space to help Jade make a decision, this can be seen as a form of scaffolding for a novice learner in this setting. I would assume that if the yellow team considered their team’s competency network that this play would have resulted in a more positive outcome compared to the turnover which occurred.
