The first collaboration between G . F Smith and students from Kingston School of Art, Under Water: paper and movement explored the dynamic qualities of the Colorplan range through a large-scale installation. Movement is an important aspect of paper that is often overlooked. Documentaries such as Blue Planet have sparked the imagination of the Public by showing the majesty of sea creatures.

The exhibition asked the question, how can paper evoke a sense of wonder through movement? We invited visitors to animate a pod of paper whales with their hands to bring them to life. Lifting and holding the small, dark grey whales, exploring their movement to make them swim. Each whale was uniquely decorated with hand-made paper barnacles, which could also be seen ‘growing’ in the corners of the room. The exhibition took place in the basement gallery of the G . F Smith Show Space, which created a sense of diving ‘Under Water’, accentuated by a calming soundtrack. To make the installation, a series of nets was cut from large sheets of paper. The offcuts produced in the construction drove the visual identity of the exhibition and could be seen on display. Each stage of the making process informed the next, and no materials were wasted.

In collaboration with Euphemia Franklin and Tilda Rawls. Film by William Webb.
