Splitting, in psychology, is a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder, defined as polarisation of other persons into good and bad by focusing selectively on their positive or negative attributes. Splitting reminds us of the recently prevailing return to extreme nationalism; where left and right, I and other are constantly divided on the grounds of what separates them.

Un-Splitting intends to undo the tendency of splitting. Here, Un- Splitting addresses the tendency of splitting as a case of exclusivity and extreme objectification towards ‘otherness’ as being rooted in symptoms of illness in society.
Un-Splitting sees history as a subconsciously formed collective memory; a ‘virtual’ state that can be changed or re-interpreted.

For this performance, Young In focused on the female body-pose found in photo archives that reflect the inferiority of women’s labour in domestic space as well as in factories and the socially formed conception of young women as being non-political subjects. Participants in the performance pose as subjects from the past found in selected archival photographs of South Korean women. Different female body poses were then combined with patterns from the irregular movement of birds, to develop a unique choreography.

The performance takes place in unannounced spots at the first floor of the MMCA. The physical distance between the performers and the audience will be minimised.

분열증(Splitting)은 경계성 성격장애 (Borderline Personality Disorder)로 심리학에서 나와 상대방, 누군가의 장점과 단점이 극단적으로 분열되어 총체적으로 이해 되어질 수 없는 정신 장애 증상이다. 분열증은 나와 동의하지 않는 타자의 다름을 배타적으로 보면서 극단적으로 타자화 하며 그럼으로써 자신을 보호하는 방어메커니즘으로 작용한다. 분열 증상은 최근 국가들의 극단적 국수주의 현상과 유사하다고 보여 지는데; 좌익과 우익이, 나와 타인이 그룹 안에서 끊임없이 양립하고 선을 그어 분리시키는 현상과 크게 다르지 않기 때문이다.

비-분열증은, 분열증을 철회하거나 반한다는 것을 의도한다. 이 작업은 배타성이나 극단적 타자화가 우리 사회에 잠재적으로 내재된 병리증상이라고 보면서, 그러한 증상을 다양한 개인 주체의 몸적 실천을 통해 반복적으로 와해시키고자 시도한다.

이 작업의 안무를 위해 홍영인은 여성의 저임금 산업 노동, 경제적으로 환산되지 않는 가사노동, 젊은 여성이 비정치적 주체로 여겨져왔던 사회적 관습을 반영하는 역사 아카이브 이미지들을 조사하였다. 사진에서 발견된 남한 여성들의 몸과 특정 포즈를 동작으로 발전 시켰으며 이것을 새의 불규칙한 움직입과 교차시키는 지점에서 독특한 안무를 발전시켰다.

퍼포먼스는 미술관 1층 공간의 불특정 장소들에서 일어나며 관객과 퍼포머들의 물리적인 간극이 최소화 된다.
