Synopsis |
A helpless woman confronts a "black object" with a power greater than hers. The "black object" shoots her questions. The woman has answers to these questions, but can't say them aloud. She feels up against the wall, and begins to throw up beautiful colorful flowers instead of speaking.

Director’s statement |
The movement which began with the words “MeToo” has now spread across the globe, pushing Japanese women, who had been silent on the issue of women, to raise their voices. The movement grew to what it is now because these women chose to challenge this grand authority—impossible for a person to fight alone—used their voices and their words, and planted them in the modern soil, which allowed it to grow and spread. The oppressed are not only women, however. Immigrants, refugees, LGBT—all minorities who coexist with the majority can become oppressed.

The title, “Grand Bouquet,” is about transforming the voice of an insignificant human being into a flower, and to push it outside of oneself despite the pain. If people begin to gather in support, raising voices in unison, these voices and words may grow into a bouquet, powerful enough to break the status quo, and create a new horizon—that is the hope with which I named this piece. But, when people gather, it again births invisible individuals.

No animal can betray these physiological sensations or emotion which boils up from the inside. Peel back my skin, and within my body, you will find an entire world: each organ, blood vessel, cell, and hormone intertwine to keep me alive. But why is it that I am alive, and when will I become sick, and die? No one has the answers to these critical questions. Though I can will myself to speak, I cannot will my own heart to stop.

This film is my voice and my flesh, born out of an unknown body named Nao Yoshigai, and the spark it caused with all of the events which occurred around it. If my flesh and voice, which will remain as a film, can become a gift for someone, to be metabolized for energy for the next generation, I will be satisfied. We will continue to collect flowers from around the world to send a bouquet for the future.

Director’s biography |
Born in 1987 in Japan, Nao Yoshigai is a filmmaker, dancer and choreographer. Her film is "dancing." She choreographs image and sound for time to focus on "watching and listening" as a motion picture, based on physical sense and phenomena which are unique for living things.

あらすじ｜
非力な個でしかないひとりの「女」が、自分より遥かに巨大な力を持つ「黒い塊」と真っ向から対峙する物語。「黒い塊」は女に一方的に問いを投げかける。女はそれに対して答える意思は持っているのに、言葉にして答えることができない。追い詰められた女は、声を出す代わりに、口から色とりどりの美しい花を吐き出してしまう。

監督ステイトメント｜
“MeToo”という言葉をきっかけに始まった運動は、今や世界中に広がり、これまで無言だった日本の女性たちでさえ、声を上げ始めました。彼女たちが、自分一人だけでは決して戦えるような相手ではない巨大な権力に真っ向から挑むことを決め、「声」を発し、それを「ことば」にしたから、そしてそれが広まる「土壌」が、現代にはあったから、これほど大きな運動になったのだと思います。弱者は女性だけではありません。外国人、難民、LGBTなど、あらゆる多数派のなかに交わろうとするすべての少数派の人間が、弱者になり得ます。

「Grand Bouquet」というタイトルは、小さな存在でしかないひとりの人間の声を花に変えて、身を切られる思いでそれを自分の外側に押し出すこと。それに賛同する人々が集まり、皆で声をあげれば、声や言葉が大きな花束となって強い力を持ち、現状を打破し、新たな地平を築くことができるのではないか、そう願いたいと思ってつけました。けれども人々が集まるということはまた、その群れにまぎれて見えない個人を生むということでもあります。

すべての生き物は、その身体の内側から湧いてくる生理的な感覚や情動に逆らうことはできません。わたしという一人の身体の皮膚を一枚めくれば、まるで世界そのもののように、各臓器、血管、細胞、ホルモン物質が複雑に関わり合って、わたしを生かしています。けれどもなぜ今生かされていて、逆にいつ病気になり、いつ死ぬのか、こんな大事なことは誰にもわかりません。自分の意思で声を出すことはできても、自分の意思で心臓を止めることはできない。この映画は、吉開菜央というひとつの未知なる身体と、その身の回りに起きたすべての出来事がスパークすることによって生まれたわたしの声であり、肉体そのものです。映画として残されたわたしの肉と声が、だれかにとってのギフトになり、次の世の、新陳代謝のためのエネルギーに使われるなら本望です。わたしたちはこれからも、世界中から花を集め、大きな花束にして、未来の人々に送るのでしょう。

監督プロフィール｜
1987年生まれ。映画作家、ダンサー、振付家。生き物ならではの感覚を素材に「見て、聞く」ことに集中する時間を編集し、鑑賞者の身体感覚そのものを躍らせる映画を探求している。映画『ほったまるびより』が第19回文化庁メディア芸術祭エンターテインメント部門の新人賞を受賞。MVの監督、出演も行う。米津玄師MV『Lemon』では振付を担当し、出演もしている。
