Group exhibition «4 Solos», Connecting Space Hong Kong, 2015

Hong Kongs identity stands in stark opposition to the autocratic regime of the Chinese mainland, whose influence over the city, has grown rapidly since the city’s handover from the British in 1997. In autumn 2014 the fight for true universal suffrage brought many Hongkongers onto the streets - for almost three month.

The video work portrays the protests which can be seen as an explosion onto the streets and into a physical manifestation of a growing sentiment present in the minds of a large number of residents of Hong Kong. The Umbrella Movement marked the first time that many young Hong Kong people had ever taken to the streets. The movement was also remarkable for its sheer scale, and showed a growing sensibility among the city’s population for political questions.

Going “inside” the movement, and conducting interviews with people on the street, it becomes clear that it is in no way a harmonious and united group. Rather, what becomes visible is the enormous collection of different positions and interests represented within the mass of people seen from the outside as a singular unit (“the” movement). These different interests seem constantly in a process of negotiation with one another, creating compromises that either keep the movement going, or causes it to collapse.

The video work highlights the fact that it can only string together the directors own interpretation of the complex situation, made up of a collection of the opinions of those she meets along her path. In this way, the video becomes less about the movement itself, and more about a more reflexive questioning of representation of any societal process, along with the dangers and pitfalls of translation that come with it.
