I found the most compelling element of the long takes in Tsai Ming-liang’s film, The Hole, to be the movement of bodies. In the scenes where we first see someone with the virus crawling though the streets and when the female protagonist is moving around her littered apartment like a cockroach, the abnormal body movements captivate the viewer. In my short scene, I tried to use a similar, strange manner of moving about the house to keep the viewer invested in the extended take and it seemed that a heist would be the most apt place to use such movements. Additionally, I tried to implement other novel elements like the captioning as well as the the old-style Hollywood music & color scheme to introduce a satirical side of the clip. This was meant to mimic how Tsai Ming-liang used musical numbers, performed in flashy dresses, to contrast the severity of the characters’ situations.
