Today I’m speaking AGAINST the approval of Royal Charter Schools, given the controversial background of Soner Tarim & his affiliation with the Gulen movement. We need our tax dollars to stay in our traditional public schools in Texas.

I view this Turkish charter not only as a threat to national security but also a threat to our democratic process AS CHARTERS DO NOT HAVE LOCALLY ELECTED BOARDS. This removes the VOICE of the TAXPAYER

There’s a reason the Royal application was denied a year ago. What has changed since then?

I’m the first person to point out FRAUD/WASTE/ABUSE in our ISDs but I don’t believe charters provide any relief from that…….they only DECREASE transparency and INCREASE fraud.

Also - There’s no real room for INNOVATION in public schools OR charter schools since they both follow the same TEKS and both have the STAAR assessment …which stifles INNOVATION

Parents seeking alternatives to the public schools see the SHINY buildings and the SLICK materials of charters but they don’t realize charters DISCRIMINATE where the public schools can’t.

Charters were once thought to CHERRY PICK their students which may no longer be the case……I have found that charters CHERRY-KICK out students they don’t want…….

* Special needs
* Behavior problems
* Or ELL

They send them BACK to the public schools where we educate ALL children

We need to reject Royal Charters and impose a MORATORIUM on the expansion of charters in TEXAS
