Keith Aldworth at Tidbinbilla preserved a series of Polaroid photos documenting sunset at Surveyor 3, May 1967.
This sequence contains what were apparently the last images transmitted by the spacecraft. The shadow of the solar panels is cast on the interior slope of Surveyor crater.
Mike Dinn, Deputy Director at Tidbinbilla, writes,
“The project never expected Surveyor 1 to survive the night, but it did. They expected 3 to do so but it didn’t.”
