A wip personal project from five years ago that I still think about to this day. I hope to pick it back up soon, as I've learned so much more and my tool set's progressed leaps and bounds.
Modeling credits for the two characters:
Bruno Camara (Cyborg) - artstation.com/brunocamara
Aldo Vicente (Mechanic) - artstation.com/aldovicente50& ;
I saw Bruno's character and was immediately drawn to him, still am actually. Love the proportions and the design in general. I had also seen the movie Automata, where the VO is from, and couldn't get Javier Bardem's modulated voice out of my head. So I pitched Bruno the idea of animating his character and he was onboard. I modeled out the env and asked if Aldo would be interested in letting me repurpose his mechanic from a previous project to play the role of the mechanic.
The story that I had in mind was that the cyborg killed his creator (the mechanic). And though I still like the idea, I think there's to much going on and when I revisit this project, I'll probably remove that element, tighten the camera, and only animate to the actual VO (about six seconds). This way the focus would be more about the arm connecting, turn away and interaction hitting the light.
The biggest pitfall I had on this project and why it got shelved, was I jumped the gun at the start. I got overly excited and rushed the initial planning stages before all the assets where ready. Then the modelers weren't able to provide what my lighting artist needed, and the env I modeled was only for anim and would need heavy rework to be rendered, so a bottleneck was hit. When I get back on this project, I hope that pruning it down to the on the VO, removing the unnecessary character and tightening the framing to show less env will be enough to push through. Also since viewport playblasts have gotten a lot better with viewport 2.0, I maybe be able to create a decent black and white playblast that could have a film noir quality.
If you like the env, you can get it at my online store (3dFiggins.com/Store)
