Inspired by a couple of my favorite sex scenes (especially Nicholas Roeg’s DON’T LOOK NOW) and @yokoonoofficial’s sublime short film exploration of the human body, FLY, this is my attempt at making a personal, romantic and tender piece of erotica with an unusual perspective.

French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard once said, more or less, that the problem with Hollywood is not its aesthetics but its desire to dominate the world with its aesthetics, thus not allowing alternative and unique filmmaking styles to emerge from other countries and smaller film industries. The result is that 90% of the movies we see, no matter what the specifics of the story, feature a hero, the woman who loves him, a 3-act dramatic structure, and a song that plays over the end credits.

I’ve been thinking lately about how the same is true with pornography. We’ve let the billion-dollar porn industry hijack our desires and condition us into thinking that sex is supposed to look and feel a certain way. Of course there are an infinite number of sex acts to observe on the internet, but 90% of them are essentially filmed the same way. Wide shot, close-up, moans & groans, always too well-lit, and, most of all, always the domineering presence of the person behind the camera.

It is this third presence - the leering pornographer - that creates the sordid feeling of porn. This can be enjoyable of course, but it’s also why romance and tenderness and vulnerability are so rarely depicted.

So with this video I wanted to see what would happen without wide-shots, without a tripod, and without a third-party filming: only closeups, because, unless there’s a mirror, sex is always up close; only constant movement of the camera, because sex is rarely still; only shared camerawork by the bodies involved, so there is equality in the perspective and no outside presence.

Many thanks to my friend Lorena for collaborating with me!
