What is the purpose of this exercise?
To stretch the scapulohumeral muscles – the muscles which connect between the shoulder blade and humerus (big upper arm bone)
Why would you utilize it?
Limitations in scapulohumeral length will limit our ability to keep the shoulderblades flush on the ribcage/torso during overhead movement – inadequate motion will result in the shoulder blade being pulled out and around along with the humerus
From a performance standpoint, ensuring the shoulder blade remains in a firm position is important for optimizing force generation and acceptance. Whether a competitive weightlifter or overhead athlete (baseball player, volleyball player) the individual will benefit from addressing a limitation here
From a pain standpoint – if we have pain located at the front of the shoulder (as the shoulder blades wrapping around will inadvertently place more force on the front of the shoulder) or pain that is relieved by keeping the shoulder blades pinched closer together then we may want to address this.
