For this assignment, I wanted to expand my knowledge of 3D modeling and animation. I learned new tools in Maya, like how to create and use rigs and controls, and how to use the shape editor to create blend shapes. I also gained knowledge on texturing and UV editing. Unfortunately the rig didn’t work out like I’d hoped, but I still believe that the animation came out well.

I wanted to create a simple story that was easy to understand without narration, while also testing the limits of my 3D animation abilities. My story idea is of a candle that is jealous of another candle’s sheltered spot, because his flame keeps threatening to go out. I also wanted the ending to be unexpected.

I modeled the candles and the candle holder in the side view, utilizing the edge loops to get rounded, symmetrical shapes. Everything else was fairly easy as they were basically all cube-like shapes. My environment is an outdoor scene, like a park or a backyard during a windy evening. I was attempting to imply that someone had left their studying materials outside and forgotten about them.

This assignment was my first full-length 3D animation in which I created everything myself. I hope that you enjoy!
