After shooting a time lapse of the Space Station flyover on the evening of September 15, I noticed a pronounced orange glow beyond the mountains to the north of me, distant flares being dropped in a presumed military exercise. I had seen this before in my three years at Joshua Tree, also in that direction far away. I set up my camera and obtained sequences of the activity over time. Each exposure was 4 seconds at F:2 at a high ISO setting. Each second here is about a minute in real time.
These are processed to better show the aircraft and stars so the brightness of the yellow flares is highly exaggerated. First we see a faint ‘burst’ of distant pale glows over the horizon. Next we see numerous aircraft including some nearby helicopters passing through. Ignore any lighting changes etc this side of the mountains, all the action is far beyond the mountains North and Northeast of Joshua Tree, CA. Last is a brief sequence of a closeup of one of the flare groups that was in direct view.
