In 2018, Discontent City residents and their supporters took over the abandoned Rutherford School in Nanaimo, launching the Schoolhouse Squat. The squat revealed the depth of anti-poor hate that's woven into Nanaimo society: a mob led by the white supremacist Soldiers of Odin formed outside to threaten the squatters, School Board Chair Steve Rae immediately started smearing the action with false claims, and the RCMP moved in after the first night to arrest all 27 squatters with Break and Enter. 4 squatters were eventually singled out and had to pay legal fees and restitution.
