Arts Mildura is proud to announce our major exhibition: SALTbody.
Salt is most often seen in its ubiquitous white granule form, but this exhibition asks us to think a little deeper on the power, potency and politicisation of ‘the only rock we eat’. Beyond table salt, what other role does this substance play in our lives?
Taking a post-colonial viewpoint, the exhibition uncovers many striking images and ideas that connect us to salt.
The exhibition brings together a national cohort of significant artists, to create and present work throughout September and October 2019.
Artists include some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists and performance makers including Jill Orr, Gretel Taylor, Vanessa White, Keg de Souza and Lesley Dickman.
The exhibition features dance video, photography, installation and visual art. Highlights of the exhibition include:
– Vanessa’s White’s dance video features a lone dancer exploring the incredible Lake Tyrell Salt Flats
– Gretel Taylor’s contemporary work ‘scourge’ responds to issues of salinity and post-colonial land management around the Mallee
– Lesley Dickman’s Salt City features an entire scale model of an urbanised cityscape, created by growing salt crystals

In reflecting on the exhibition, Arts Mildura’s General Manager Gareth Hart says:
“The body and salt share an intricate relationship, and this exhibition is a reflection of the body and landscape, with direct reference to this place (Mildura and surrounds).
From a political perspective, salt has many readings, being a western and eastern trade resource over time, arriving in Australia by boat across vast amounts of saltwater, medicinal practices using salt, and how the body sweats salt as a response to tending to working the land. And as such, we are interested to bring attention to reflections on colonisation through the exhibition (but then again, isn’t all the work we make post-colonial….).
