Phonics is a method for teaching people how to read and write an alphabetic language (such as English, Arabic, and Russian). It is done by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language (phonemes), and the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) or syllables of the written language. This is also known as the Alphabetic principle or the Alphabetic code

➢ Sounds:
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.
• Single Letter Sounds
The starting point for Phonics for All is the Single Letter Sounds grid set. This explores the smallest unit of sound, a single letter on its own.
• Diagraphs
This grid set explores the main digraphs which can either be found at the beginning or end of the word. Students work through the different consonants that make one sound.
• Medial Sounds
The Medial Sounds grid set teaches the vowel combinations that are generally occur in the middle of a word.
➢ Sound Recognition
Identify sounds in spoken words (phonological awareness); recognise the common spellings for each by:
• Work sheets
• Flash Cards
• Actions
• Songs related to Sound
➢ Sound Formation
Sound forming by showing an action which helps children remember the letter(s) that represent it, like a word game.
• Missing Letters
• Frame sentences
• Phrases
➢ Blending Skills
Blending means merging phonemes together to pronounce a word. In order to
read an unfamiliar word phonemically, a child must attribute a phoneme to each
letter or letter combination in the word and then merge the phonemes together to
pronounce the word.

➢ Segmenting Skills
The process of hearing the phonemes in a word and being able to recall the graphemes to spell that word.

➢ Tricky Word
