Children, teenagers and Millennials are the first generation who may not have known a family member who fought as a partisan against the Nazi occupation of Italy during World War II. The further we move away from conflict, the more important it becomes to keep the Italian Resistance movement against Nazi-Fascism stories alive, commemorating the lives of those who fought for our country. For this reason in April 2018 we asked younger readers to share stories of their grandfathers and grandmothers who took part in the Resistance movement. We asked them to fill in a form published on our website where they could answer some questions about their partisan grandparents. We urged them to share with us anecdotes and photographs. Very soon we started receiving stories from readers - some of them as young as thirteen years old -, proud and well aware of what their relatives had done for Italy and for them too, as they often told us. After a difficult selection process, we published the most significant stories on an attractive template. The final result painted a heartbreaking, harrowing and haunting picture of life on the front line. We also found out that although some studies might suggest that many young people are unaware of certain historical facts, many of them are passionate and eager to know, to study and to share that cultural heritage that shapes our Italian and European identities and in the end our everyday lives.
