A few years ago we went to see ELBOW at the Manchester Apollo. Near the end of the evening Guy Garvey started singing the opening line to this advert and asked if the audience remembered it. He said that it was one of his memories of home at Christmas.
I'd started working as a junior animator at Orchid Productions in June 1985 and this was one of the adverts I helped to create. My good friend Julian Kronfli and I animated the characters. Everything was shot on 35mm film (pre-digital days) with hand inked and painted cels and airbrushed backgrounds.
I was also involved in filming the live action. I had to lie on the floor and move the bottles into position, twisting them to face the camera, while Marc Ingham pulled the rope and all the bottles up the wall while balancing on a step ladder.
