Dance, like architecture, is design in space. In his evolving project Corporeal Decorum, Liony Garcia echoes South Beach's iconic Art Deco architecture, using the evanescent architecture of choreography and the flowing movement of dancing bodies to exalt its swirling stucco friezes, its graceful geometry.

Garcia fell in love with Deco as a young boy just arrived from Cuba, when his aunt drove their family to the Beach. He was enchanted by the sense of freedom and glamor, the pastel buildings, the swooping inline skaters. It remained a place to escape until four years ago, when he was shocked by a familiar Sobe street torn up by construction. He began thinking about how past and present, experience and imagination, were captured in this unique architecture. The modernism embellished with fantastical tropical flora, Mayan or Egyptian imagery. "All these ideals are physicalized," he says.

Garcia aims to build Corporeal Decorum into an evening-length piece, to renew awareness of the beauty and history, the seductive Miami-ness, embodied in Art Deco. And the fragility of a place imperiled by neglect, development, and sea level rise. "It needs to be tended to," he says. "I'm also thinking about the future."
