Kapsule investigates the relationship between environmental psychology and movement and strategically selects distinctive places to depict specific timelines, including childhood, past, present, future, and afterlife. The cast traveled to the winter streets of Toronto, the white sand and southwestern wonders of New Mexico, and the glaciers and waterfalls of Iceland to film this ambitious project.
The project integrates photography, film, and live performance and can be reimagined in various settings, including live stages, film theaters, and galleries.
Lawrence Fung
Raised in the concrete jungle of Hong Kong and the American Southwest, the presence of contrast has been a common theme in the dance works, films, and photographs that Lawrence creates.
The self-taught choreographer/visual artist has a particular interest in finding details and patterns in his worldly encounters. Inspired by the vastly diverse landscapes and environments we live in, the young artist finds purpose in uncovering the hidden layers and stories beyond what meets the eye.
Lawrence uses film and photography to draw attention through his composition, color palette, display of scale, mix of dance styles, and cinematic movement. He then invites his viewers to an encapsulating story-telling experience inspired by the collaboration of various art forms, philosophical concepts, collective experience, and his unique worldview.
As a filmmaker, Lawrence has premiered and received multiple national and international awards for his short screen dance films, most notably Cohort 707 and Burden. His films have screened at several festivals, including the IMZ festival in Germany, the American Dance Festival, Utah Dance Film Festival, Phoenix Dance Film Festival, CASCADIA Dance & Cinema Festival, Idaho Screendance Festival, and Los Angeles Experimental, Dance & Music Film Festival.
