Next to an extensive print campaign, the digital and online expressions of IABR gave the opportunity to emphasise the dynamics, conflict and challenged of the Delta. Together with developer Martijn van Bachum, we translated this into an interactive installation at Rotterdam Central Station. The installation consisted of a floor projection, a sensor and tailor made software. The software was written in Processing, a Java-based language, developed for creative coding. The downward facing Kinect sensor used infra-red to measure depth. This way the sensor identifies the positions of travellers. Whenever a traveller would enter the frame, a new text was shown and the deltas were interacting with the travellers movement. The visual elements and the text would follow the visitor within the frame. The texts consisted of well-known quotes about the environment, like “There is no planet B”, “Creating space, means sharing space”, “The energy transition is first of all a social challenge”.

The goal was to raise awareness for environmental issues in a playful way. Earnest in content, yet optimistic in delivery: just like the IABR campaign concept of ‘radical optimism’.
