There are over 500,000 dialysis patients in the U.S. who deserve access to innovation in new machines. We believe those on dialysis deserve to live a “new normal” life, whether that be working, volunteering, or traveling, and that they should be able to be full participants in family and community life.
Unfortunately for decades, innovation in new dialysis options for patients has been sorely lagging behind technology developed and used to treat many other chronic conditions. Dialysis patients have been largely dependent on equipment that has changed little in the last few decades. However, with quick action by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) this could change.
We appreciate that CMS recently created an add-on payment to reimbursement of dialysis facilities to account for use of new technology. However, the devices that patients rely on the most, new dialysis machines, were deemed ineligible for this add on payment. Dialysis machines are the most vital equipment to improving patient experience and outcomes and should be included in the New Technology Add-on Payment Adjuster for New Innovative Equipment and Supplies (TPNIES) to the End-stage Renal Disease Prospective Payment System. This would encourage facilities to adopt new machines that can make it easier for patients to be empowered and involved in their own care, to do dialysis at home, and have an improved quality of life. Currently there are at least 3-5 new dialyzers in the approval pipeline for use within the U.S Without proper and timely reimbursement providers will be slow to adopt this new technology as it becomes available, and patients will not have access to choose a dialysis machine that best suits their needs.
With current shortages of dialysis equipment and supplies due to the pandemic, having new technology available for use is even more critical than ever. We urge you to implement a policy that will ensure that patients can obtain access to the not only the latest technology, but also new dialysis equipment that is readily available for acute and chronic care during these difficult times. Improved access to care is critical to patients to improve their health and well-being.
Please support our petition to help patients access new technologies and innovative renal replacement therapies.
