Soon after independent television and radio were established in Lithuania, one of the first television lotteries „Keno Loto“ was introduced. For 25 years now, every evening at 8.30 on Lithuanian National Television channel, the bright yellow lottery balls are put into action. For all of those years, the show didn’t change much – the only thing that did change every night was the dress on the forever young veteran host Laima Kybartienė. The daily lottery is such an undeniable staple of everyday life that it has become a symbol of permanence and assurance.
The show is a peculiar phenomenon, connecting the post-soviet past and the present. I combine the familiar and lively sound of the lottery with a ghostly image of now abandoned Sports Palace building – majestic in it’s exterior and melancholic in impression. It is a game, a dialogue between one that has survived and another that is disappearing. It is a call for hope and longevity – “so we could meet again”.
